What Is Metal Mesh Fabric?

When designing with architectural metal mesh fabric, it’s important to consider how you will employ the material.metal mesh fabric There are many weave patterns to choose from, and each has a unique characteristic. As prominent architectural metal mesh fabric providers, we’re here to help you make the best choice for your specific design goals.

Mesh fabric is a calculated arrangement of metallic wires interlocked together to create different weave styles. Each weave style receives a name that describes its appearance, and each has a particular strength that is suited to certain applications. The most important characteristics of any mesh fabric are its tensile and breaking strengths.

There are several methods of creating metal mesh, including woven, expanded, perforated, chemically milled, photochemical etching and simply laying metallic fibers into felt mats. Each process or product starts with either raw steel wire or metallic fibers that are reacted and shaped into polymer strands before being woven into fabric.

Woven metal cloth is constructed by arranging wires at right angles to one another, with the parallel or warp wires running the length of the cloth. The perpendicular or crosswise wires, known as weft wires, close the gaps between the warp wires, creating a netting-like surface that is sometimes referred to as metal fiber cloth or synthetic mesh fabric. Woven wire cloth can also utilize crimped or non-crimped wire, which impacts the quality and durability of the finished product. Crimped wire has a wave-like or sawtooth profile that helps to lock the parallel and crosswise wires in place, making it harder for sharp objects such as nails to penetrate through the netting than non-crimped wire.

While many types of mesh are made from raw materials such as aluminum, steel or brass, stainless steel is a common option because it offers greater corrosion resistance than other types of mesh. Stainless steel mesh also has smaller openings than other types of mesh, which makes it ideal for precision filtering and straining.

There are numerous practical uses for metal mesh fabric, both indoors and outdoors. Decorative metal mesh is a popular element of furniture, cabinetry, ceiling canopies and other architectural elements. It’s also perfect for landscaping and gardening, from trellis supports and vegetable cages to fences and gabions.

Lastly, welded and expanded metal can be used in concrete reinforcement to increase the durability of the structure. The most common forms of these are welded iron or copper welded wire, although galvanized or stainless steel can also be used. Iron welded wire is commonly used in agriculture and construction to protect livestock, while copper and bronze are popular choices for ornamental garden structures such as gates, sculptures and firepits. For industrial and commercial applications, woven or welded wire mesh is used to reinforce concrete, create safety barriers and contain equipment. Depending on the application, it can also be welded to other metals to serve as a support or foundation. It’s even possible to construct bridges using this type of metal mesh.
